No visit to Florida would be complete
without seeing the grandeur that is the Everglades. Renowned throughout the world, the vast
"river of grass" is a subtropical wetland that is home to hosts of rare birds, mammals and reptiles.
The slow moving river of water flowing through South Florida gives rise to
many diverse ecosystems. Coastal and saw grass prairies, mangrove swamps, tree islands, pinelands, hardwood hammocks and coastal estuaries are all located within the lands the Calusa Indians called Pa-hay-okee, meaning "grassy waters."
The Florida Everglades are teaming with wildlife. Snail kites, Peregrine
Falcons, Wood Storks, Bald Eagles, Short Tailed Hawks, Smooth
Billed Anis, Mangrove Cuckos, Tree Snails, Manatees, American
Crocodiles, Florida Panthers and Cape Sable Seaside Sparrows are some of the rare fauna that inhabit the
Florida Everglades. Perhaps no other animals represent the area's biological diversity and wealth better than the birds.
In any given year, as many as 257 species of birds may use the refuge's diverse wetland habitats. |
